The gold embroidered cape that the Madonna wears on special occasions was given by Paolo Nicolosi of Contessa. Paolo was captured and held prisoner during WWII. It was his faith in God that helped get him through this terrible time in the concentration camp. He envisioned a gift for the Madonna and vowed that he would give this gift when he returned safely to his loved ones and Contessa. Today, Paolo is age 85, alive and well. If you ask him, he will show you the letter that he carries in his pocket that was sent to his family mistakenly telling of his death in the war.
